About 27GSNS

The 2027 Geological Society of Nevada Symposium (27GSNS) is organized and managed by a volunteer committee of Geological Society of Nevada (GSN) members. This committee dedicates its time and expertise to deliver a premier technical and professional gathering every five years. 

The Symposium advances geological sciences across the Great Basin and the broader United States by convening geoscientists from academia, industry, andgovernment. 

The event features:

  • Technical talks and keynote presentations
  • Field trips
  • Short courses
  • Exhibits
  • Poster sessions
  • Core shacks

The Symposium attracts Nevada-based and international delegates and is widely recognized for the technical excellence of its presentations within a collegial andengaging professional environment. 

Past Symposium proceedings and field trip volumes have received awards for their quality and are regarded as among the most comprehensive and authoritative collections of geoscience literature focused on the geology and ore deposits of the Great Basin and American Cordillera. 

Governance & Organization
The Symposium is led by a volunteer Steering Committee consisting of:

  • Chairperson
  • Deputy Chairperson
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer

The 27GSNS Volunteer Committee is responsible for delivering the 2027 Symposium on behalf of the Geological Society of Nevada.
Event functions are coordinated by subcommittee chairs overseeing:

  • Registration and payments
  • Sponsorship and fundraising
  • Exhibitors
  • Field trips
  • Technical program oversight
  • Keynote speakers and presentations
  • Short courses
  • Posters and core shacks
  • Publications and advertising
  • Social media
  • Event application management

The 27GSNS is further supported by advisors with prior Symposium experience.

Monthly hybrid meetings (Zoom and in-person) are held on the second Monday of each month, excluding December.

About the Geological Society of Nevada (GSN)

The Geological Society of Nevada is a nonprofit professional geoscience organization whose mission is to promote the advancement of geological sciences in Nevada. 

The Society fosters the dissemination of scientific and applied knowledge through: 

  • Technical presentations

  • Field trips
  • Publication of proceedings and related literature

The GSN holds regular member meetings in Reno, with active chapter groups in Elko and Winnemucca. The Southern Nevada Chapter was reestablished in 2025.

The GSN Foundation

The GSN Foundation supports geological education across Nevada through:

  • Elementary and high school field trip grants
  • University scholarships
  • Geological mapping grants in partnership with the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology

From 1994 through 2025, the GSN Foundation has contributed $575,000 toward educational initiatives.
